Letter from the Principal

125 years ago Holy Name of Jesus School opened its doors.  The opening was not in our present facility but it was a milestone as 600 boys and girls began a tradition.  Faith in God guided the Sisters of St. Joseph in providing a quality academic and religious education.

Over the years the tradition continued.  The Sisters, Brothers and lay Faculty had one major goal:  to provide the students with the best education possible while instilling in them the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

The 1970’s were a time of change in the church and in society.  The Brothers left the school, while the Sisters continued to reach out to and instruct the children of the parish.  As the number of the religious declined, lay people began to fill their roles.  A competent and dedicated lay staff has long replaced the Sisters and Brothers.  In 1994, the school welcomed its first lay principal.  In September 2008 I became the first graduate of Holy Name of Jesus School to become principal of our school.

The last twenty-five years have witnessed dramatic changes in our society and our community.  The number of children attending Catholic Elementary School has declined significantly over the years and the demographics of Brooklyn have likewise changed.  Gone are the days when families had multiple children and then made sure the children attended a Catholic School.

Today we are faced with greater challenges.  Enrollment decline continues and the Diocesan plan to form “One Catholic Academy” in inevitable.  On the positive side, our students state testing scores are on the rise.  Holy Name of Jesus School is truly blessed because of its faculty, staff and administration.  These adults are dedicated to your children.  Their goal, as was the goal when Holy Name of Jesus School first opened in 1885, is to provide the students with the best possible education.  In addition to its emphasis on maintaining high academic levels, Holy Name of Jesus School makes preserving the school’s Catholic identity a priority.

Holy Name of Jesus School continues to be committed to the educational ministry of the Church.  We have dedicated ourselves anew to the youth of the community and to spreading the Gospel Message of Jesus.
